To maintaining a healthy aquarium, having the right filter media is crucial. Filter media helps keep your water clean and provides a suitable environment for your aquatic pets.

  • Mechanical Filtration: Mechanical filtration primarily removes physical debris from the water. It captures visible solid particles such as uneaten food, fish waste, and decaying plant material.  Regular cleaning is essential for mechanical filters. If not maintained, the filter may become clogged, leading to water pollution. Replacement- It’s recommended to change the mechanical filter media occasionally to ensure optimal performance.
  • Biological Filtration: Biological filtration creates a suitable environment for beneficial bacteria to thrive. These bacteria play a crucial role in completing the nitrogen cycle within your aquarium. These bacteria convert harmful ammonia and nitrites into less dangerous nitrates. Biological filtration is essential for maintaining stable water conditions and preventing ammonia spikes.
  • Chemical Filtration: Chemical filtration involves using specific materials submerged in the aquarium water to achieve desired effects. Like- Activated carbon, GFO (Granular Ferric Oxide) and Zeolite.
Remember that these three types of filter media work together to provide a crystal clear water environment for your fish.
